Who dares, wins: so he got started and created his winning video.
What inspired you to take part in the Elsword contest?
I wasn’t really bothered about the contest at the beginning, since I’d never really put together any videos before. But when I saw the list of prizes, second place really whet my appetite, since I’d finally be able to get rid of my old machine and replace it with something new. And after all, you’ve got to be in it to win it, as they say. Being a complete novice, I certainly never thought I’d win. I thought long and hard about how I wanted my video to look. When it came to the editing, for example, I had to fall back on using my high-performance laptop which had the processing power necessary for the video editing software. And since the videos had to be uploaded to YouTube, it gave me the perfect excuse to take the plunge and set up a channel. Basically, you could say that my main motivation for participating was the prize for second place, plus the idea of becoming a YouTuber.
In your video you re-enacted the story from the Elsword trailer. How long did it take you to play through to the highest level and get the gear you needed?
I created my Elsword High Knight about four years ago, about the time the new character Eve was released. So you could say it took me about four years to reach level 80, since the level cap was increased in the meantime. In terms of the Elsword story, I needed about two hours to record all the in-game dungeons – from Ruben through to Ranox – and then about another hour to play through some extra bits like the Scar instance. I felt it was particularly important to record the final battle scenes properly.
How long did you work on the concept for your video?
Once I’d recorded the bits I needed from the game, I got down to editing them. I had a look through some of the videos already posted on YouTube and got the feeling they were missing something: a storyline. So my video starts off with a training scene, followed by the start of an adventure, a battle against demons, Elsword’s memories, and the final battle. It must have taken something like 30-35 hours to edit the video over a period of four days. In the end I managed to finalise and upload it to YouTube on the day before the official start of voting, so my video was there from day one.
Which programs did you use to record your in-game material and edit the recordings afterwards?
I used the recording function built into the game to take the clips. Afterwards I used Sony Vegas Pro 13 to put the video together, in particular for the transitions, slow motion sequences, zooming and other effects. I used pictures to create the animé-esque intro and incorporated karaoke-style subtitles. In my opinion that really makes the song lyrics to ‘Playing with Fire’ come through.
Did anything funny happen whilst making your video? Any moments that were particular stressful or special while making your recordings?
I honestly thought I was going to go mad making that scene with the press-ups. I needed a player from my guild to help me record the animation. It required him to defeat me in PvP without killing my character, but there was always an unfavourable angle or some kind of obstacle in the way, which made it difficult to get the recording I wanted. We must’ve recorded the scene you see in the video a good 15 times. At which point I should say a great big thank you to my pal for his patience. Apart from that, there were quite a few sequences where I needed to do several takes, such as the fight against Scar. Either I defeated him too quickly, or he’d be standing in the wrong place for the recording I wanted, so I’d end up having to either wait or run away a little to get him in the right position. It’s the little things like that which took so much time.
Who do you want to take to South Korea with you and why?
At first I didn’t really know who to take with me, since my friends are all busy with work, school or other things. But in the end I decided I want to fly to South Korea with my best friend. He went through a really rough time in mid-January. I hope the trip will be an opportunity to him to get his mind off that and think about something different.
